Hector Vasquez

Hector Vasquez of River Grove, a Fire Science student at Triton College, always knew he wanted a career that would help others and make a positive impact on his community. For him, training to be a firefighter at Triton was the clear choice.

“I want to help people and make an impact,” he said. “This path just clicked.”

After high school, Vasquez initially attended Illinois State University, but soon realized he wasn’t suited to the large school setting. He then transferred to Elmhurst University, but still felt it wasn’t the right fit.

“I realized during those years that becoming an emergency medical technician (EMT) was my calling,” he explained. “Triton is two blocks away from my house and they have a great program. I knew I would be in good hands at Triton.”

Upon arriving at Triton, Vasquez quickly found that the Fire Science Program provided real-world experience and a deep understanding of what it takes to become a firefighter. He said the people in the program have become like family to him.

“Hector is a star student both inside and outside of the EMT classroom,” said William Justiz, chairperson of Fire Science and Emergency Service Programs. “Hector is committed to his success in becoming an EMT and serves as a role model to other students in the classroom.”

Justiz also highlighted Vasquez’s contributions as a math tutor and upcoming role as an embedded tutor in the EMT class.

“Hector is a born leader,” added Justiz. Looking ahead, Vasquez will graduate with an associate degree from Triton College in May. After graduation, he plans to earn his paramedic license and pursue his career as a firefighter.

“Triton’s program helped me become successful,” he said. “This college is for everyone and they truly care about your needs.”

The Fire Science Program at Triton College is designed for individuals seeking a career in fire service and related fields. Graduates of the program may qualify for hiring, promotional and salary incentives offered by some fire departments. The curriculum follows the guidelines set by the Fire Emergency Services Higher Education (FESHE) Division of the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA).

Fire science graduates can pursue a variety of career opportunities, including roles in fire equipment sales and service, municipal fire protection, fire prevention inspection for industries and architectural firms, insurance investigations and emergency medical services. Students who complete programs approved by the Illinois State Fire Marshal's Office may petition for equivalent credit toward an associate degree in fire science.
